Planet Cake Course – Basics 102

Posted on April 19th, 2010 in Cakes

On Friday, I spent another day at Planet Cake.  The course I was enrolled in was Basics 102 which is a square present box cake with a figurine.

I have never made a square cake on my own before because I have heard that they are quite difficult to ganache and cover and to get that ‘sharp edge’ look.  I have been waiting to do the Basics 102 course before I attempted it on my own!

We started out by cutting an 8 inch square chocolate mud cake into 3 layers and torting it with ganache.  Then we did a crumb coat, then a final coat and then we ‘hot knifed’ the cake to achieve the sharp edges and corners.

After a lovely lunch, we made a bow out of fondant and then we covered our cakes.

Then it was time for the fun part, putting the bow and ribbons on the cake, and creating the figurine!

I am very happy with my cake!  Everyone’s cakes were excellent – each cake was so different!

Once again, I absolutely loved the Planet Cake course, I can’t wait to do my next one, which is Miniature Garden Cupcakes next weekend!
