Giant Nutcracker Prince Cake

Posted on December 29th, 2011 in Cakes

This Giant Nutcracker Prince Cake was made in class at Cake Decorating Central over 5 Thursday nights.

I learnt a lot creating this cake including working with rice crispy treats and styrofoam.

I was very happy with my Giant Nutcracker Prince and it made my house look very festive :)

Christmas Bauble Cake

Posted on December 5th, 2011 in Cakes

My latest cake was made in a class at Inspired by Michelle.  I have been following Michelle’s blog for a couple of years now, and was very excited when she announced that she would be teaching classes.

The class was ‘How to Make a 3D Ball Cake’ and because it is so close to Christmas, we decorated the cakes as Christmas baubles.

The cake was carved from two 7 inch square chocolate mud cakes and was layered and covered with dark chocolate ganache.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class – Michelle was a great teacher and I can’t wait to book into some more classes with her!

Phalaenopsis Orchid Pot Plant Cake

Posted on November 7th, 2011 in Cakes

I made this cake for my lovely friend from work, Amanda. I saw this design a few months ago and knew it would be perfect for Amanda’s birthday!

I made the phalaenopsis orchids over a week during the evenings and baked, ganached and decorated the cake over the weekend.  The pot plant cake was carved from two six inch chocolate mud cakes.

I was very happy with this cake, although it was quite a challenge transporting it to work on the bus!

I think Amanda liked the cake and had a lovely birthday.

Giant Cupcake Cake

Posted on October 5th, 2011 in Cakes

This weekend I decided it was time to break the cake drought by making a cake just for fun.

Ever since I purchased my copy of the Planet Cake book, I have wanted to make the Giant Cupcake.  For some reason, I found the idea of making this cake quite daunting.  So because I was making a cake for no reason at all other than to just make a cake, I decided to go for it.  If it all ends in disaster, I can just throw it out!

I decided to use the instructions in the Planet Cake book and changed the design by making it more like Andrea’s SweetCakes’ Giant Cupcakes.

I used an 8 inch round caramel mudcake and milk chocolate ganache.  I found the sculpting of the bottom of the cupcake really easy, but creating the top using the offcuts was a bit more difficult.

I was so happy with the end result and can’t wait to make another one!
